The focus of this book draft is on the USDA during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. This book draft was written by ten historians, most of whom worked for the Agricultural and Rural History Section of the Economic Research Service, USDA. The project planner and overall editor was Douglas E. Bowers, who wrote the beginning overview of the Kennedy-Johnson administration and chapters on economics and extension. Lowell Dyson wrote about the Foreign Agricultural Service, OICD, REA, crop insurance, and the earlier parts on ASCS. Anne B. W. Effland wrote the APHIS chapter on the 1980s. Alan Fusonie, of the National Agricultural Library, wrote a history of NAL. Douglas Helms, of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (formerly the Soil Conservation Service), contributed the chapters on SCS. Norwood Allen Kerr covered science and education, rural development, food programs and APHIS (through Nixon-Ford), and also wrote a short history of NAL in the 1960's. Wayne D. Rasmussen covered cooperatives. Dennis Roth wrote the chapters on the Forest Service and the later ASCS administrations. Joel Schor handled the chapters on the Farmers Home Administration. Vivian D. Wiser wrote about agricultural marketing.
