Abstract

Since the time of decolonization, agricultural economists have played a significant, but not always determinant, role in the debates regarding the place of agriculture in economic development. Several phases can be identified in the evolution of these debates : from the promotion of community development through the green revolution and, later, integrated rural development, to the emphasis on structural adjustment policies. For the future, the current challenge facing agricultural economists is to respond to concerns raised by environmental issues.
