Abstract

Originally the concept of ecodevelopment was formulated in a rather restrictive manner, as a rural development strategy in the Third World based on the ingenious use of local resources and peasant know-how. But this formulation has rapidly become outof-date. Ecodevelopment has become synonymous with endogenous socio-economic development based on the living, organized forces of the society, aware of the ecological aspect and trying to effect a symbiosis between man and nature. The variables in the harmonization of the basic assumptions of development and environment are as follows: 1. consumption policies. — 2. time-planning policies. — 3. technological policies. — 4. space-planning policies. — 5. policies aimed at husbanding rare resources and at making the best use of plentiful ones. — 6. energy policies. — 7. environment policies in the strict sense of the word. An attempt of ecodevelopment is illustrated by the example of planning in the Amazon region of Peru.
