Abstract

Excerpts from the Preface: Israel is the largest recipient of U.S. food assistance, if measured on a per capita basis. For this reason, it is particularly appropriate to review PL 480 Title I (Agricultural Trade Development and Assistance Act of 1954) and related food assistance programs as they have affected the Israeli economy. These effects may be favorable, functioning in such a manner as to increase consumption, improve external financial reserves, or increase economic activity through investment. It is also necessary to determine whether there have been any unfavorable repercussions, such as displacement of commercial imports, decrease in local agricultural production, loss in farm income because of lower food prices, or discouragement of investment in agriculture.
