Abstract
Despite the low density of pigs in the Massif Central, the pig economy plays an essential role in maintaining slaughter and processing tools, and in cultural identity. A recent research and development action makes it possible to describe and understand the forms and conditions of maintenance of these barely visible but essential farms. Based on the analysis of recent data from BDPORC, as well as postal and direct surveys, it explains the diversity, specificities, and prospects of these predominantly mixed pig-herbivore systems.
