Excerpt from the report: Money value of food used at home (excluding alcoholic beverages) rose from $24.43 per household per week in the spring of 1955 to $27.82 in 1965, an increase of 14 percent. This information is based on national surveys of household food consumption conducted by the Department of Agriculture. Over this decade, prices for food used at home rose 13 percent, as measured the Bureau of Labor Statistics ' Consumer Price Index.
