Abstract

Excerpts from the report Preface: This report on the impact of new varieties of grain in Asia was prepared by the Economic Research Service under an agreement with the Agency for International Development. It is part of a larger study on the outlook for demand of agricultural products produced by the less developed countries. This report estimates the contribution of the new varieties of rice and wheat to the production of grain in Asia in 1968-69. Since the estimate is necessarily rough, it is presented as a broad range of possibilities. The paper includes a discussion of various factors which may tend to slow the spread of the new varieties in Asia and also comments on some of the probable economic and social effects associated with these new varieties
