Abstract

P reliminary data indicate that Federal expenditures for food assistance programs rose 15 percent, from $4.2 billion in the first quarter of 1982 to $4. 8 billion in the first quarter of this year, reflecting the downswing in the economy, higher food prices, and expanded food distribution to low-income persons.
