Abstract
A total of about 387 data were collected from three regions of Bangladesh namely Chandanais, Chittagong; Dhamrai, Dhaka and Jhinaigati, Sherpur to observe the variability in production of indigenous village chicken of Bangladesh. Among the regions, the highest average body weight of birds was found in Chandanais (1357.81± 43.02g) and lowest in Dhamrai (906.64 ±12.25g). In case of egg production, the highest average egg production of hen was found in Chandanais (14.24±0.67 eggs per clutch) and lowest in Dhamrai (12.54 ±0.21 eggs per clutch). The regional difference in body weight and egg production performance was highly significant (p<0.001). On the other hand, plumage color (Black, blackish red, blackish white, blackish yellow, yellow, whitish yellow, reddish yellow, white, blackish brown, brown, grey, reddish white, brownish yellow and brownish red) wise body weight of birds varied significantly (p<0.001) and difference in egg production was also significant (p<0.05). Existing variation indicates that village community based pure breeding programme may help to improve indigenous chicken of Bangladesh.
