Abstract

The growth performance of Scenedesmus obliquus in fertilizer factory effluent media (FFEM) was Studied in the laboratory. Five different concentrations viz. 40, 45, 50, 55 and 60% FFEM and Bold basal medium (BBM) as control was used with three replications for a period of three months. Each trial was done for a period of 14 days in the laboratory. The initial cell density of S. obliquus was 2.2x105/m1 which attained a maximum density of 135.34 cells/nil in BBM followed by 119.10, 99.33, 93.49, 87.71 and 82.37 (x105) cells/m1 in 50, 60, 55, 45 and 40% FFEM, respectively on the 10th day of culture. The maximum chlorophyll a content for FFEM and BBM was 6.12 and 6.86 mg/I, respectively on the 10 th day of culture. The specific growth rate (SGR, pt/day) of cell and chlorophyll a of S. obliquus were found in the range of 0.36 to 0.41 and 0.38 to 0.41, respectively and was significantly (p< 0.05) higher in BBM. The maximum total biomass was found 458.95 mg/I in BBM, which was also significantly (p<0.05) higher than other treatments. Overall growth performance of the alga S. obliquus was significantly (p<0.05) higher in 50% FFEM than other concentrations of FFEM.
