Abstract
U.S. agricultural export values rose 5 percent in calendar year 1984 to $37.8 billion,
the first increase since 1981. U. S. agricultural imports in 1984 jumped to a record
$19.3 billion, up $2.8 billion. from 1983.
High U.S. interest rates and rapid economic
growth helped strengthen the dollar in 1984. Agricultural exports under U.S. Government financed
programs totaled $1.26 billion in fiscal year (FY) 1984 (October 1983-September
1984), 4 percent below 1983'8 record and 3 percent below 1983's record and 3 percent of
all U.S. agricultural exports in FY 1984. U.S. agricultural exports to Sub-Saharan Africa
are forecast to dip to $1.24 billion during FY 1985, about 6 percent below FY 1984's
record $1.33 billion. Commodity Credit Corporation. guarantees will boost U.S. agricultural
exports to the Middle East and North Africa in FY 1985.
