Abstract
The objective in this report is to outline a relatively inexpensive way to assess
household dietary adequacy in rural Mozambique. The inclusion of 24-hour food consumption
questions in a national survey would provide an opportunity to do this. Due to cost-considerations,
food consumption information collected on a national scale needs to be simple, especially given
the other information demands on most agricultural or health surveys. Thus, a full quantitative
assessment of the foods eaten by a household in the previous 24 hours is not possible. However,
a survey that just collected information on which foods were consumed at which meals in the
previous day would be sufficient. How do we translate qualitative information on the types of
foods eaten into a quantitative assessment of dietary adequacy? This paper demonstrates a
technique calibrated with data from a previous intensive study of food consumption in rural
Mozambique. The method proposed in this report is based on data collected in the 1995-96
Nampula/Cabo Delgado (NCD) study.
