Abstract
Sustaining livelihoods in fragile environments, characterized by land degradation amidst the increasing threat of climate change, is a significant challenge. Soil salinity and other forms of land degradation severely affect crop yield and food supply. Hence, both preventive and curative strategies are essential for managing salt-affected and waterlogged saline soils. To effectively promote such strategies, policymakers need robust evidence on their socioeconomic impacts. This study provides evidence of the economic impact of subsurface drainage technologies. In addition, it identifies constraints faced by farmers and project implementation agencies during the execution and operation of the subsurface drainage system. By highlighting these challenges, this study offers valuable insights into the practical difficulties in implementing strategies for reclamation of waterlogged saline soils.
