Abstract
Gatton grass (Panicum maximum cv. gatton panic) is a cultivar that was selected for being perennial, of erect growth, which develops large clusters. Results from several adaptation tests have shown good growth of cv. Gatton panic from sea level and up to 1800 m, in humid tropics with high precipitations, and in sub-humid conditions with five to six dry months and annual precipitations higher than 500 mm. The objective of this study was to communicate the potential that Gatton grass has in the northeast of the Chaco region, Argentina, as a source of fodder. Among its best advantages, it shows that fodder production ranges from 7.5 to 10.5 t of DM ha1 year1, where 20 % of this yield can be produced during the dry period. The fodder quality of cv. Gatton panic is high compared to other tropical grasses. Values of RP between 6 and 11 % have been reported and in vitro digestibility of the dry matter between 55 and 70 %.
