Abstract
Local knowledge systems are strategic to the conservation of vanilla (Vanilla planifolia Jacks. ex Andrews.). However, the knowledge possessed by peasants in the Huasteca Potosina region is unknown. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the knowledge associated with the handling of vanilla in the Huasteca region of San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The research was carried out through ethnographic techniques and the application of 15 semi-structured interviews. Convenience sampling and qualitative analysis were used to interpret the information collected. Five management stages were identified, which were associated to the orographic, environmental and socio-cultural conditions of the area, where the plants were found. This body of knowledge represents a social learning around the interactions of peasants with their biological environment, which generates a decision making about the direction of this resource.
