Abstract
Biofuels appears to be an energy resource of the future. Biofuels production has started to compete with production of food crops in fertile soils; which may be a risk to food security. Therefore, a suggested strategy is to use degraded areas with scarce agronomic value for the production of biofuels. For instance, soils polluted with potentially toxic elements (PTE), which hamper the establishment and development of plants. Mining, agriculture and other industrial activities release PTE into the environment. In order to make the most of polluted sites, plants need be adapted to the conditions of these soils. This study presents a review of various biofuel crops ́ potential to develop in soils polluted with PTE. This proposal must be critically and objectivelly assesed.
