Abstract

The cultivation of roots and tubers occupies the second place globally in the sown area and production volume with 47, 523,000 ha and 556 676,000 t. Taro (Colocasia esculenta Schott) is a non-traditional crop and because of its characteristics of tropical zone, it is a product that can feasibly be cultivated and place México as the principal supplier for the United States. With the adoption of this crop, the monocrop of mango (Mangifera indica L.) could be abated, which predominates in the coastal region of Chiapas, México. The main aspects of taro cultivation as incipient crop and the social traits of producers are described.
