Abstract

In the Costa Chica region of Guerrero, México, maize (Zea mays L.) is grown under irrigation and rainfed conditions. In the 2012 Spring-Summer cycle, 198 maize farmers were visited, with the objective of advising and identifying the biological type of maize that is sown under diverse soil conditions. Plots were georeferenced and followed up until estimating grain yield. Four native populations of the races Vandeño, Olotillo, Tepecintle and Conejo were identified, one Asgrow hybrid, 22 from INIFAP, 14 from Pioneer, six from UNISEM and nine cultivars from INIFAP. The native populations occupied a larger sowing surface in soils of low productive potential, while the hybrids and national varieties were located in soils of medium potential, and the transnational hybrids were found in soils of high productive potential.
