Abstract

The state of Guerrero, México, has a broad diversity of phytogenetic resources, including those related to Cucurbita spp., and understanding their wealth allows defining strategies for their study, conservation and use. A collection of Cucurbita spp. genetic resources was performed, with the aim of promoting their conservation and using them in genetic improvement programs. During 2012-2013, fruits and seeds were collected to carry out their preliminary characterization, which evidenced the existence of broad inter-specific diversity, with C. moschata standing out with a broad variation in shapes, textures and coloring of the fruit, in addition to showing multiple dietary uses in which the fruits, flowers, tender vegetative shoots and seeds are used. This makes it an important crop in the state of Guerrero.
