Abstract
Excerpt: The Plan Sierra is a large integrated rural development project in the Dominican Republic. The main objectives of the project are to conserve the natural resources of the region and to improve the standard of living of the people. These objectives will be achieved through programs of land management, agriculture, education, and health. Although nutrition is considered to be an integral part of health and education programs, a comprehensive nutrition plan has not been developed. A nutrition survey was conducted to determine the extent of malnutrition in the area served by the Plan Sierra and to obtain information regarding food beliefs and practices needed to design a viable nutrition program.
