Abstract

Despite the fact that women generally do not have much authority in farm policy making, some 24% of small scale farms in Kenya are fully managed by women. Their contribution to farm labour is around 50% and they tend to know more about the individual farm enterprises. However, womens' role is curtailed by the institutional and cultural systems which emphasise the role of men.
