Abstract

Report Introduction: In 1921 the Bureau of Chemistry of the United States Department of Agriculture undertook a study of the production of gas from straw and similar material now often wasted on American farms. Only one of the types of equipment available for straw-gas production, and that not the most improved one, and only a few of the many kinds of material which may be carbonized were used in these tests. The experiments, however, were extensive enough to show that the type of equipment employed in these tests is not practicable as a farm unit, even though the gas produced can be satisfactorily used for heating, lighting, and stationary power purposes.
