Abstract

The structure of US rural banks (those located outside the boundaries of Metropolitan Statistical Areas) is analyzed, and comparisons are drawn with urban banks. Elements analyzed include bank performance, asset composition, lending to small businesses, and earnings and capital. Rural banks, which are structured differently than urban banks, outperformed urban banks in profitability as well as asset quality and continue to be among the better capitalized banks in the US.
