Abstract
Excerpts from the report: The 1959-60 survey of farmer marketing, farm supply, and related service cooperatives showed an increase in the total dollar volume of business of cooperatives, a decrease in memberships, and a continuation of the downward trend in the total number of cooperatives. Total gross value of farm products marketed, farm supplies handled, and receipts for services performed by cooperatives amounted to more than $15.6 billion. This represented an increase of 2.7 percent over the $15.2 billion in 1958-59. Total net volume, after eliminating duplication resulting from interassociation business, amounted to more than $12 billion. Compared with the net volume of more than $11.7 billion in the previous year, this was an increase of more than $286.1 million, or 2.4 percent. The total number of memberships decreased by 285,095 in 1959-60 to a total of 7,273,455. The number of cooperatives in the survey decreased from 9,658 in 1958-59 to 9,345 in 1959-60, representing a net decrease of 313 associations.
