Abstract

Excerpts from the report: In standard Chemical Specialties Manufacturers Association (CSMA) 14-day mothproofing tests, 101 compounds were investigated as potential mothproofers. The compounds were applied to the cloth at 0.5 and 3 percent by weight. The test insects were larvae of the black carpet beetle, Attagenus megatoma (Fabricius). Results were evaluated according to excrement weight. Cloths treated with 44 compounds were satisfactorily protected in precleaning tests on the basis of all requirements of the test method. Cloths treated with 10 of these compounds at both calculated deposit levels and with 19 compounds at the 3 percent by weight rate of application were also satisfactorily protected after one washing. Cloths treated at both calculated deposit levels with 13 compounds and with five compounds at the higher calculated deposit level were satisfactorily protected after one drycleaning.
