Abstract

Excerpts from the report: The market potential for domestic felting linters is good. During the last several years, domestic production of felting linters has failed to equal domestic utilization by one-fifth to one-fourth of the amount used each year. Imports of high-quality felting grades have supplied the additional needs. The demand for felting linters is directly related to the demand for bedding, furniture, and automobiles, which are major outlets for such linters. The overall objective of this study was to determine the market potential for linters in present and future end uses with a view to expansion of market outlets. Specific objectives of the project were (1) to determine the economic factors affecting the use of linters and competing materials in chemical and nonchemical end uses, and the reasons why competing materials have captured an increased share of markets formerly held by linters; (2) to determine physical and chemical properties needed by linters to increase their utilization in present and potential end uses; and (3) to determine research needs and opportunities for improving linters utilization in competitive markets.
