Abstract

Excerpts from the study: The study that is the basis of this report was started in the spring of 1955 at the request of the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce "Agri-Hort" Committee, Wholesale Market Subcommittee. The Department of Agricultural Economics, Michigan State University, and the Kent County Extension Service cooperated in the collection of data. This study of the facilities for handling the major food commodities at wholesale in Grand Rapids is part of a broad program of research to reduce costs of marketing farm products. The study had the following objectives: 1. To analyze the present wholesale food marketing situation in Grand Rapids and to ascertain the adequacy of present facilities in the light of present and future needs. 2. To suggest and describe new marketing facilities adequate to provide efficient marketing for Grand Rapids' food supplies. 3. To estimate costs of construction and possible operating expenses and sources of income of the proposed new food marketing facilities. 4. To estimate the potential benefits to be obtained from construction of a new and modern food center.
