Abstract

More than 60 percent of the southwest Wisconsin farmers who quit farming between 1982 and 1986 did so for reasons other than financial stress. Many of them retired and remained in the same house as when they farmed. Those who left farming for financial reasons emerged with improved incomes, but many moved out of their communities and still had farm debts to pay off.
