Salted fish is an important component of the Indonesian diet. However, little is known about the pattern of salted fish consumption in Indonesia. In this article a description and analysis of the pattern of fish consumption with respect to household expenditure and urban-rural stratification is presented. The database used in the analysis is SUSENAS 1981. Emphasis is given to the level of consumption per capita and the distribution of consumers. In general the result of the analysis shows that salted fish consumption and the proportion of households consuming dried fish is greater at higher levels of income. This indicates that the market for salted fish has good growth prospects under prevailing market conditions. It means the per capita demand prospects for salted fish in the domestic market are steady, over and above the increasing demand due to population growth and quality improvement through innovation in processing technology. Improvements in marketing and technology will have a positive impact on both fishermen and consumers.
