Abstract

Economic insecurity in Virginia's coat counties leads to depressed levels of well-being on a plethora of socioeconomic indicators. It's not just low income that yields that result. Other Virginia counties, with similar income levels, have better indicators of quality of life. Income instability, a big problem in the coal counties, proves to be an important component in perceptions of wealth and, hence, well-being.
