Abstract

Excerpts from the report: Transportation costs are the largest item of marketing costs for molasses and the major factor affecting the price to consumers and the returns to producers. Previous studies of molasses marketing problems have shown that the ratio of transportation and marketing costs to the consumer's purchase price is very high. The ability of producers to dispose of molasses in distant markets in competition with other feedstuffs depends largely upon the costs and efficiency of transportation and marketing. This report is devoted to the transportation of molasses from the producer to the user, with particular attention to the methods, practices, and costs of the three types of bulk transport--trucks, railroads, and waterborne carriers--between seaport terminal or mainland producer and consumer.
