Abstract

Excerpts from the report Preface: Operating practices of the cottonseed oil milling industry as reported to the Bureau of the Census, Department of Commerce, are analyzed in this publication. Specifically, an attempt is made to relate variations in practices to variations in costs and other economic factors. The data on which the study was based were made available by the Bureau of the Census in such form as not to disclose the operations of individual establishments. Each month the vegetable oil mills in the United States report their operations to the Bureau of the Census. Principal items for which information is given are: Seed received, seed processed, products manufactured, and products shipped. From these data the seed on hand and products on hand can be directly computed. Also, biennially through 1939, and for 1947, the Census of Manufactures provided information on hours of labor employed, selected costs of operation, and value of products.
