Excerpts from the report Introduction: For the first time significant comparisons can now be made between migratory hired farm workers and other workers on farms in the United States. Phases that can be compared are the population characteristics, the employment, and the earnings at farm and nonfarm work. In a national cross-section survey of a sample of households visited in December 1949, information was obtained regarding those individuals in the household who were migratory farm workers during 1949. The collected information provides a picture of the current migratory farm working force and gives other types of information not previously available on a national basis. Because the information was obtained as part of a sample survey of individuals who did any farm-wage work in 1949, comparisons between migratory and nonmigratory farm workers are possible, and they are presented in this report.
