An ERS study found mixed impacts on five natural resources if, in 2007, all Americans had adopted a diet in keeping with Federal recommendations. The U.S. food system’s use of agricultural land, fossil fuels, and forest products would have fallen, freshwater withdrawals would have increased, and greenhouse gas emissions would have remained essentially unchanged.
