While most stores that redeem WIC benefits are typical food retailers, States can also authorize “above-50-percent” (A50) stores, which derive more than 50 percent of their food sales from WIC transactions, to redeem WIC benefits. A50 stores tend to locate close to WIC participants. A recent study found that without A50 stores, most WIC participants reliant on these stores in the Greater Los Angeles area would need to travel further to redeem their WIC benefits.
