The presentation to follow is based on observations made during· the life of a Programme of Research into Cropping Systems for Small Farmers. This programme was initiated in 1973 by the Department of Tropical Crops and Soils of CATIE (Centro Agron6mico Tropical de lnvestigaci6n y Ensefianza or the Tropical Agricultural Research and Training Center).
