This report provides a classification of counties and independent cities by level of urban influence in 1990. Urban influence is measured by the size of metro areas, the adjacency of nonmetro counties to each size of metro area, and the size of the largest city within each nonmetro county. This classification may be a valuable tool for researchers interested in the effects of population concentration on county economies
