Abstract

This report contains estimates of world population from 1950 to the late 1980's, depending on the latest .country census, and projections to 2050. It also shows annual rates of population growth for each country and region According to the projections, world population will expand from an estimated 5.3 billion in 1990 to 6.3 billion in the year 2000 and to 10.7 billion in the year 2050. However, the world population rate of growth is expected to decline from 1.7 percent per year in the 1990's to 0.7 percent between 2040 and 2050. The information is provided for 204 countries, grouped into 14 geographic regions. It is a part of the Bureau of the Census population data bank used in the Economic Research Service (ERS).
