Eleven million people lived in households associated with farming by residence, occupation, or income in 1983. Alternative criteria developed in this report yield a farm resident population of 5.6 million in March 1983, a farm occupation population of 7.4 million, and a farm income population of 6.3 million. Differences noted between the farm occupation population and farm resident and income populations relate primarily to the farmworker component of the farm occupation population.
