Abstract

Paper presents GLS estimates for a model to explain rural deposits in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Per capita rural income, bank density and real rate of interest for deposits were significant variables. Access to bank branches is important because of the transaction costs of making and withdrawing deposits.
