The levels and dimensions of income inequality in Africa are heterogeneous, with varying; degrees of intensity, diversity and drivers. Since 1990, income inequality trends in the; continent have been multi-dimensional, exhibiting a rising, a falling, a U-shaped, or an; inverted U-shaped (∩) trends.1 These variations emphasise the importance of achieving a; deeper understanding of each of these trends in Africa towards identifying key drivers and; to offer policy recommendations for the countries associated with each trend. Focusing on; specific drivers of progress on income inequality allows for a clear understanding of why; some countries make significant progress while others lag behind. This focus also makes; it possible to draw policy lessons regarding human and institutional factors that define; successes and failures in African countries.
