Abstract

The concept of sustainable development in its fundamental features has become one of the basic perspective global attitudes accepted by all developed and transforming countries of the world, as well as supranational organizations. The realization of the aim is based on the sustainability of Slovakia by using Ecological Footprint, followed by the comparison with the countries of the European Union, and quantification of the Ecological Footprint of the crop production in Slovakia. The paper focuses on the group of main farming crop products - cereals within the limits of plant production. From the viewpoint of the Ecological Footprint it can be stated that the biocapacity of the plant production in Slovakia is not exceeded. In 2006 the value of the Ecological Footprint was 0.28 of a global hectare and the biocapacity was 0.36 of a global hectare.
