In western Massachusetts, where almost 90 percent of former farmland is no longer in commercial use, we study factors that motivate landowners to grow biomass energy crops. A geographic information system model identifies a landowner population, and a contingent valuation survey reveals payments landowners are willing to accept (WTA) for growing biomass crops. The median WTA estimate is $321 per hectare per year, which is high compared to regional land rental rates. Nonpecuniary factors appear to be as important in landowner acceptance as profit opportunities, especially for nonfarmer landowners. 000189788 650__ $$aCrop Production/Industries 000189788 650__ $$aDemand and Price Analysis 000189788 650__ $$aEnvironmental Economics and Policy 000189788 650__ $$aLand Economics/Use 000189788 650__ $$aResource/Energy Economics and Policy 000189788 6531_ $$aabandoned farmland 000189788 6531_ $$abiomass energy crops 000189788 6531_ $$acontingent valuation 000189788 6531_ $$awillingness to accept 000189788 700__ $$aTimmons, David 000189788 773__ $$tAgricultural and Resource Economics Review 000189788 773__ $$jPrepublication Previews 000189788 8564_ $$968698e25-3411-4d8f-8016-205718c8a09e$$s418721$$uhttps://ageconsearch.umn.edu/record/189788/files/ARER2014%2012%20Timmons%20AEPrepubl.pdf 000189788 887__ $$ahttp://purl.umn.edu/189788 000189788 909CO $$ooai:ageconsearch.umn.edu:189788$$pGLOBAL_SET 000189788 912__ $$nSubmitted by Natalie Karst (nataliek@randomfierce.com) on 2014-11-20T21:35:23Z No. of bitstreams: 1 ARER2014 12 Timmons AEPrepubl.pdf: 418721 bytes, checksum: 1828573c479f69f955652f03627e30de (MD5) 000189788 912__ $$nMade available in DSpace on 2014-11-20T21:35:23Z (GMT).
