Abstract
The origins of extension work can be traced largely to the format organization of "agricultural extension" during the second half of the nineteenth century in Europe and North America, the models having since spread to other geographical areas and to other fields of human activities. What remained throughout, however, has been the idea of extension as a way of communicating technical and scientific information to clients on the assumption that once they started using this information it would enable them to improve their living conditions (Huizinga, 1982, p. 134).
