The main routes for making the global agricultural system more productive are through intensification and technological change on currently used agricultural land, land expansion into currently non-agricultural areas, and international trade in agricultural commodities and processed goods. In order to analyse the trade-offs and synergies between these options, we present a global bio-economic modelling approach with a special focus on spatially explicit land and water constraints as well as technological change in agricultural production. For a given bioenergy demand scenario until the middle of the 21st century and different land allocation options, we analyse the required rate of productivity increase on agricultural land as well as the implicit values (shadow prices) of limited land and water resources. The shadow prices for bioenergy are provided as a metric for assessing the trade-offs between different land allocation options. 000051458 546__ $$aEnglish 000051458 650__ $$aEnvironmental Economics and Policy 000051458 650__ $$aInternational Development 000051458 650__ $$aInternational Relations/Trade 000051458 650__ $$aLand Economics/Use 000051458 650__ $$aResearch and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies 000051458 6531_ $$aLand use change 000051458 6531_ $$aSpatial modelling 000051458 6531_ $$aTechnological change 000051458 700__ $$aLotze-Campen, Hermann 000051458 700__ $$aPopp, Alexander 000051458 700__ $$aBeringer, Tim 000051458 700__ $$aMuller, Christoph 000051458 700__ $$aLucht, Wolfgang 000051458 8564_ $$96d7eb0e9-6395-4f21-9efc-cf63c8b0c58f$$s180605$$uhttps://ageconsearch.umn.edu/record/51458/files/lotze_campen_manuscript_iaae_2009_final.pdf 000051458 887__ $$ahttp://purl.umn.edu/51458 000051458 909CO $$ooai:ageconsearch.umn.edu:51458$$pGLOBAL_SET 000051458 912__ $$nSubmitted by Hermann Lotze-Campen (lotze-campen@pik-potsdam.de) on 2009-06-23T20:54:53Z No. of bitstreams: 1 lotze_campen_manuscript_iaae_2009_final.pdf: 180605 bytes, checksum: 7947b80ae694d063d8a23c838f22ce24 (MD5) 000051458 912__ $$nMade available in DSpace on 2009-06-23T20:54:54Z (GMT).
