Excerpts: The purpose of this report is to present information concerning grain sorghums in order to show the essential relationship existing between them and wheat and corn. Up to the present time grain sorghums have been an important crop in the United States only in certain semi-arid regions and even there they are not an important cash crop. They are used chiefly for feed on the farms where produced; consequently, the quantity entering commercial channels and thence into industrial utilization is small. Research underway and contemplated by the Northern Regional Research Laboratory, Kansas State College, University of Nebraska, and elsewhere may lead to substantial uses for grain sorghums in industry. The basic information contained herein, showing the properties of grain sorghums, their present and possible uses, and their present position in the over-all agricultural economy, may contribute, it is believed, to the development of new industrial outlets for these grains or in extending their present uses.
