Objective: describe the methods of habitat quality assessment in three methodological elements: population dynamics, the presence of key species and traditional methods of habitat suitability assessment (HSI).Metodology: a bibliometric analysis was performed to systematize and describe the advantages and disadvantages of the methodologies for the evaluation of wildlife hábitat.Results: the phototramp is a technique widely used to estimate population parameters (abundance and density) that, in parallel, denote the presence of larger carnivores, some of them considered species indicative of a conserved habitat were analyzed. For their part, traditional methods based on transects and quadrants have the advantage of being standardized techniques that can be implemented at virtually any type of vegetation cover, are easily replicable and inexpensive. HSI models are the least biased to characterize the habitat based on quality parameters, but intermediate-advanced knowledge in the use of GIS is required to predict, with a certain degree of reliability, the potential habitat with suitable characteristics for a given species. Implications: the assessment of habitat quality is necessary to make decisions on population management and habitat conservation, and the success of a population’s survival depends, to some extent, on a habitat that meets the niche requirements for A population to develop.Conclusions: this review allowed the analysis of traditional and emerging techniques such as HSI models implemented in GIS to assess habitat quality would be more efficient as they complement the photo-trapping methods and the traditional ones.
