Objective: To analyze some factors that affect the welfare of sheep, and to know the protocols that are currently used for its evaluation.Approach: It is necessary to know the behavioral characteristics of sheep (social organization, sensory capacity, and cognition), in order to achieve good animal welfare levels, without compromising their productivity. In addition, it is necessary to assess sheep welfare by physiological, sanitary, zootechnical, and behavioural indicators.
