The statistical situation of herds and recent developments The total number of cattle, two thirds are composed of dairy cows, has, from 1963-1969, continued to tend more and towards a type of production where meats is only a by-product or side-line compared with the production which is particularly shown by an increase in dairy cattle in large stables and by the development of these stables, is restricted only by a maked tendences of farms of more than 20 ha to give up stock-raising to devote themselves to other productions. Perhaps only farms of more than 50 ha situated in Central France have a slight tendency to develop meat production independently from that of milk.
