The training and retraining policies for extension agents have changed considerably over the past 15years. This derives both from changes in production techniques and in the resulting increase in the amount of knowledge farmers need and from structural evolutions in Danish agriculture which involved greater specialization of farm units. To fit the increased needs of farmers in service training of advisors was intensified. It is not only a matter of updating and strengthening their knowledge in the various specialized disciplines. Progressively and in accordance with their wishes more emphasis is placed on broader themes, on pluridisciplinary approaches, on communication techniques. The goal, not yet reached, is that each advisor follow two weeks of in service courses per year.
